The Basics of Roulette

Roulette is a game of chance, and a lot of fun. It’s also a game that requires you to place bets, and understand the odds involved in each bet type. There are a number of bet types in roulette, and the house edge is dependent on the type of roulette you play. Generally, you should choose the European version of roulette since it offers a lower house edge.

The wheel consists of a solid wooden disk that is slightly convex in shape. It has a rim with 36 pockets, 30 of which are painted alternately red and black. The rest, called the canoes by croupiers, are green compartments, which contain 0 and 00. The wheel also has a tilted circular track that runs around the outside of the disk. The croupier spins the wheel in one direction, and a ball rolls around the track until it stops at a pocket that corresponds with a specific number on the layout.

When you play roulette, you’ll give the dealer money between decisions by putting it on the table and asking for “colour.” The dealer will then hand you coloured roulette chips that have a value equal to the amount you gave her. If you’re betting with a small amount, it’s best to only use coins that you don’t need for any other expenses.

You can place bets on a variety of different groups of numbers in roulette, including straight bets, split bets and corner bets. Straight bets are placed on a single number, and the payout is 35:1. The payout for split bets is 17:1, while corner bets offer 16:1. If you want to win more frequently, consider placing a bet on an outside group of numbers.

Dozens bets, or douzaine in French, are wagers that the winning number will be in one of the first 12 numbers on the layout, or any of the three dozens. This bet pays 2-1, and is less risky than inside bets. If the ball lands in a zero or 00, all outside bets lose.

Another outside bet is the high or low bet, which pays 1-1. This is a bet that the winning number will be in the first 18 odd or even numbers on the layout. If the ball lands on a 0, 00 or both, all outside bets lose.

The simplest way to play roulette is online. You can find it at most online casinos, and you’ll need to register to start playing. Once you’ve done that, you can deposit a minimum amount of chips to start playing. Then, you’ll click the spin button, which is located in the bottom right corner of the screen. The ball will spin around the roulette wheel in a few seconds, and payouts will be granted automatically if you win.
