A horse race is a form of close competitive sport involving horses. The term is often used as a metaphor for a political contest, though it can be applied to any type of competition in which one participant has an edge over another. The phrase is also applied to other sports, such as golf tournaments, baseball games, and basketball matches. The horse race is widely known throughout the world and can be considered one of the most popular sports in history.

The first horse races were held in ancient times. In some cases, the winners of the race were awarded with valuables such as weapons or jewelry. Later, races became more formal, with rules and regulations governing the event. During the 18th century, horse racing gained popularity as a spectator sport, especially in the United States. The sport was often viewed as a form of entertainment, with many people betting on the outcome of the race.

Modern horse racing is a high-stakes business, with bettors placing large wagers. The races are often broadcast on television, and people can place wagers via telephone or online. The sport also attracts celebrities, and some even attend the races in person. However, the risks of racing are great, and horses can suffer serious injuries or death as a result of their participation. Despite these dangers, some horses still compete in the sport, mainly because of the lucrative prize money.

A claiming race is a racing event in which a licensed owner can purchase a running horse entered in the race for a predetermined price. The runner then changes ownership as soon as the race starts although the former owner still retains all purse money for the race. The claiming process is a popular way to increase the field of runners in a race without adding extra costs for the race organizers.

Many horses are prone to bleeding from the lungs, a condition known as exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). To prevent this, they are given furosemide, or Lasix, a diuretic that is marked on the racing form with a bold face letter. This drug, which is banned in human athletes, helps to decrease the amount of fluid lost during a run.

But critics of the racing industry point out that a cocktail of legal and illegal drugs can mask an injury or improve performance. These medications include painkillers and powerful anti-inflammatories designed for humans, along with blood doping agents that boost oxygen levels. Racing officials struggle to keep up with the list of new substances, and penalties for breaking the rules are weak. Some trainers, especially in California, have been able to manipulate the system by using different combinations of substances, and then moving to another state when they are caught.
