The Game of Dominoes
The domino is a tile-based family game. Each domino has two square ends marked with numbers that indicate how many spots are on each end. To win, a player must collect all of his or her dominos in order. This game is popular in many countries. It is a great way to meet new people and pass the time.
The game is typically played in pairs or fours. The aim is to reach a fixed number of points, usually 61. The players begin with their own hand of dominoes. Then, each player matches a domino to an open end. The player is then awarded points based on the total number of pips on each open end. This is determined by dividing the total number of pips by five or three.
The domino game originated in Italy during the early eighteenth century, spreading to Austria and southern Germany. It became a popular pastime in France in the mid-18th century. By 1889, it had become a worldwide game. The word “domino” was first recorded in the 1771 Dictionnaire de Trevoux. Before that, the word “domino” referred to crude woodcuts on paper, which were popular among peasants.
Different countries have used different types of domino sets. Originally, each domino reflected one of 21 possible results of the throw of two six-sided dice. The highest value piece in a traditional domino set has six pips on each end. In addition, Chinese sets introduce duplicates of some throws. These sets are longer than European dominoes.
The most popular domino game for two players is known as the block game. This variant is played with double-six or double-nine domino sets. In this variant, players alternately extend their lines and the winner’s score is equal to the remaining pip count of the loser’s hand.
The game of dominoes has a long history. Its earliest recorded appearance dates back to the Song dynasty in China. In the eighteenth century, dominoes were introduced to Europe by French prisoners. However, there is no evidence that the Chinese version of dominoes developed into the modern game. Italian missionaries in China may have brought dominoes to Europe.
